I buried you

by Theresa Cartier

I buried you
under 350 million years of
birth life death and sediment
compressed into bedrock layered
hundreds of feet deep; beneath
restless earth crushing upward
to form the Appalachians; beyond
prehistoric ravines where
the trickle of change fractures
solid rock, widens cracks until collapse
is inevitable. There
at the bottom of Ash Cave
the earth swallowed your spirit
and set me free.
